Foothill Fire Practitioner Workshop – Georgetown

STARTS: November 30, 2023 8:30 am
ENDS: November 30, 2023 2:00 pm
DETAILS:

UC Cooperative Extension, Placer Resource Conservation District, El Dorado Amador Prescribed Burn Association, and Berkeley Forests welcome landowners and community members of all genders and ethnic and racial backgrounds to participate in a workshop aimed at elevating diverse perspectives, backgrounds, and talents while exploring prescribed burning and addressing complex forest health and fuel management issues.

Historically, people who identify as women, non-binary, trans, femme, or Black, Indigenous, people of color (BIPOC) have constituted a relatively small portion of the fire workforce or community-led prescribed fire training opportunities. Although there is increased effort to recruit diverse perspectives into community-led burning, social and cultural challenges remain. We believe that the perspectives and skills of groups who are generally under-represented in fire, including women, trans, nonbinary, femme, and BIPOC, can play a critical role in accelerating the implementation of fuel reduction treatments in our communities.

This in-person, hands-on workshop will cover fundamental topics to safely plan and implement prescribed fires including 1) Preparing burn units, 2) Common tools and equipment used in burning and mop up operations, and 3)Fuel and weather monitoring. If weather conditions allow the day will include burning a small unit for defensible space.
