Is your soil ready for winter?

STARTS: November 19, 2024 10:00 am
ENDS: November 19, 2024 12:30 pm
DETAILS:

Learn how to assess soil structure and health using in-field tools and your five senses

Lunch provided if you RSVP!

Please bring a handful of soil with you  (preferably dried)

Good soil structure is essential to healthy, productive soil.  Aggregate stability and infiltration tell us a lot about soil structure—especially erosion resistance, water storage capacity, root growth, and soil productivity. Using a simple in-field test, you can evaluate the condition of soil aggregates. Bring a handful of soil to see how it does, or better yet, bring multiples to compare soils.

In this workshop, we will:

  • Assess aggregate stability using slake and slump tests of soils from different management practices with Kabir Zahangir, Regional Soil Health Specialist, NRCS
  • Conduct aggregate stability tests with your soil (All)
  • Demonstrate soil infiltration with Kabir Zahangir
  • Share regional benchmarks for soil health (Margaret Lloyd and Lindsey Kelley, UCCE)
  • Hear from growers Scott Park (Park Organic Farming) and Andrew Brait (Full Belly Farm) on how they assess soil health on their farm.
